Commentary on Ps 106:19-20, 21-22, 23
Psalm 106 is a national lament remembering the events from Exodus 32:7-14, where the Jews, brought out of Egypt by Moses, fell into idol worship, even as he received the Law on Mt. Horeb. The psalmist reminds the people that Moses interceded and turned away God’s wrath.

Commentary on Ps 106:1b-2, 3-4a, 4b-5
Psalm 106 is a song of thanksgiving. In this selection the singer thanks God for his saving mercy and favor to his chosen people. This hymn of praise rejoices over God’s gracious help to those who trust in him. We see clearly the hand of God guiding the faithful as the psalmist proclaims “That I may see the prosperity of your chosen ones, rejoice in the joy of your people, and glory with your inheritance.”

Commentary on Ps 106:3-4, 35-36, 37 and 40
Psalm 106 is a national lament. The psalmist recalls the times the chosen people failed to follow the Law of Moses, having been seduced by foreign religions and barbaric practices. As a consequence they walked far from God, the Father who had adopted them (“And the LORD grew angry with his people, and abhorred his inheritance.”).

Psalm 106 is a national lament. The psalmist recalls the times the chosen people failed to follow the Law of Moses. Instead they were seduced by foreign religions and barbaric practices. The flight of the Hebrews from Egypt is remembered and how the people lost faith and sinned – creating graven images even though they had been rescued by God’s mighty hand at the Red Sea.

Psalm 106 is a song of lament. In this passage, we hear the remorse of the people who challenged the will of God. In spite of their great sin, Moses intercedes for them and the Lord relents.

which became a snare for them.
They sacrificed their sons
and their daughters to demons.
R. Remember us, O Lord, as you favor your people.
They became defiled by their works,
and wanton in their crimes.
And the LORD grew angry with his people,
and abhorred his inheritance.
R. Remember us, O Lord, as you favor your people.
Many times did he rescue them,
but they embittered him with their counsels.
Yet he had regard for their affliction
when he heard their cry.

Commentary on Ps 106:34-35, 36-37, 39-40, 43ab and 44
Psalm 104 is a historical psalm. Here it laments the failure of the people to follow God’s instruction to remain faithful and apart from the secular society into which they had come (in actuality they were to have destroyed those societies but did not).
