R. (12a) Blessed the man you instruct, O Lord.

Blessed the man whom you instruct, O LORD,
whom by your law you teach,
Giving him rest from evil days.
R. Blessed the man you instruct, O Lord.

For the LORD will not cast off his people,
nor abandon his inheritance;
But judgment shall again be with justice,
and all the upright of heart shall follow it.
R. Blessed the man you instruct, O Lord.

When I say, “My foot is slipping,”
your mercy, O LORD, sustains me;
When cares abound within me,
your comfort gladdens my soul.
R. Blessed the man you instruct, O Lord.

Commentary on Ps 94:12-13a, 14-15, 18-19

Psalm 94 is an individual lament. The strophes used today reflect faith and confidence in God who will continue to support the faithful in the face of their enemies. There is a clear implication that faith in the Lord will prevent the steadfast from falling prey to temptation.

R. (14a) The Lord will not abandon his people.

Your people, O Lord, they trample down,
your inheritance they afflict.
Widow and stranger they slay,
the fatherless they murder.
R. The Lord will not abandon his people.

And they say, “The Lord sees not;
the God of Jacob perceives not.”
Understand, you senseless ones among the people;
and, you fools, when will you be wise?
R. The Lord will not abandon his people.

Shall he who shaped the ear not hear?
or he who formed the eye not see?
Shall he who instructs nations not chastise,
he who teaches men knowledge?
R. The Lord will not abandon his people.

For the Lord will not cast off his people,
nor abandon his inheritance;

Commentary on Ps 94:5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 14-15

Psalm 94 is an individual lament. The psalmist sings of the defeat of the people by their enemies, and then proclaims faith and confidence in God who will continue to support them in the face of their foes.

Psalm 94 is an individual lament. The strophes used here reflect faith and confidence in God who will continue to support them in the face of their enemies. The singer calls those called to have faith in the Lord "Blessed." They will have God's help and support always; he will not abandon his adopted children.
